Evelia is the daughter of an agricultural farm working family, so she learned early on about the effects of poverty and how education could change her life. She was a teacher, principal, and later CEO of a large urban charter school network, where she helped low-income inner-city students succeed. Evelia led one of the highest-performing public high schools in Oakland, California.

Evelia Villa is a first-generation Mexican-American education leader dedicated to empowering underserved communities. She was raised in California's Central Valley, where her family worked as farmworkers, and her journey reflects her commitment to educational equity. Evelia is currently the senior director for outreach services at San Francisco Bay University, where she develops student advising programs, drives enrollment initiatives, and supports first-generation college students through the Startup Scholars Program.
Evelia previously served as CEO of AMPS Charter Schools, a six-school network founded in Oakland, California. She led the expansion of AMPS into Richmond, California, growing it from a three-school system to a six-school system serving over 2,400 students. As principal of Oakland Charter High School, Evelia guided it to become the city's highest-performing public high school in 2010.
Evelia began her career as a migrant health coordinator for the Migrant Education Program in Butte County, California. Later, she became a transitional kindergarten teacher, serving marginalized communities in Sacramento and Oakland. Evelia earned a bachelor's degree from Chico State University and a master’s degree from Sacramento State University.
