María is the director of the Upward Bound program at Kean University in New Jersey.  She was an associate director with a 33-year career at Fordham University in New York. María has dedicated her professional life to the education of first-generation and low-income children.

María Isabel Rijos has devoted her career to the Upward Bound program and advocating for academic empowerment.  She earned a bachelor's degree from the Universidad de Puerto Rico and a master's degree from Fordham University.  María spent her formative years as a youth in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.  Beyond her professional commitments, she finds solace and joy in gardening.  María shares her life with her husband Hector, her son Jacob Jaime, and her daughter-in-law Stephanie.
