She earned a bachelor's degree from the Universidad de Puerto Rico and a master's degree from Fordham University. María spent her formative years as a youth in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. Beyond her professional commitments, she finds solace and joy in gardening. María shares her life with her husband Hector, her son Jacob Jaime, and her daughter-in-law Stephanie.
